and lone-pair electrons of its oxygen atom attached to the various sites in the latter case. The absorbance of the a band increased until the BET monolayer capacity of 1.1 mmol g-' was reached but stayed constant above this water content. The reason for this result could be that these free OH groups exist only on the surface of adsorbed layers or may remain inside the layer without hydrogen bonding. A band at 3691 cm-l in spectrum 4 of Figure 6 appeared simultaneously with band a. Therefore, this 3691-cm-' band may be the fundamental stretching vibration band of adsorbed water, since the wavenumber of this band is close to those of the fundamental stretching vibration of water vapor a t 3756 and 3652 cm-1.22 A model of the configuration of the surface P-OH groups and adsorbed water is postulated in Figure 8, as a summary of the discussion described above.

Insoluble surfactant spreading along thin liquid films confined by chemical surface patterns.
We conducted a combined experimental and numerical study of the spreading of insoluble surfactants on spatially confined thin liquid films. We found that the spreading dynamics can locally be represented by a power-law relation x∼t(α). We determine the time evolution of the liquid film thickness and the corresponding spreading exponents α both from experiments using interference microscopy and ...
متن کاملSpreading dynamics and wetting transition of cellular aggregates.
We study the spreading of spheroidal aggregates of cells, expressing a tunable level of E-cadherin molecules, on glass substrates decorated with mixed fibronectin and polyethylene glycol. We observe the contact area by optical interferometry and the profile by side-view microscopy. We find a universal law of aggregate spreading at short times, which we interpret through an analogy with the spre...
متن کاملNon-aqueous phase liquid spreading during soil vapor extraction.
Many non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) are expected to spread at the air-water interface, particularly under non-equilibrium conditions. In the vadose zone, this spreading should increase the surface area for mass transfer and the efficiency of volatile NAPL recovery by soil vapor extraction (SVE). Observations of spreading on water wet surfaces led to a conceptual model of oil spreading vertic...
متن کاملLinear stability analysis of an insoluble surfactant monolayer spreading on a thin liquid film
Recent experiments by several groups have uncovered a novel fingering instability in the spreading of surface active material on a thin liquid film. The mechanism responsible for this instability is yet to be determined. In an effort to understand this phenomenon and isolate a possible mechanism, we have investigated the linear stability of a coupled set of equations describing the Marangoni sp...
متن کاملBubble spreading during the boiling crisis: modelling and experimenting in microgravity
Boiling is a very efficient way to transfer heat from a heater to the liquid carrier. We discuss the boiling crisis, a transition between two regimes of boiling: nucleate and film boiling. The boiling crisis results in a sharp decrease in the heat transfer rate, which can cause a major accident in industrial heat exchangers. In this communication, we present a physical model of the boiling cris...
متن کاملSpreading of thin volatile liquid droplets on uniformly heated surfaces
We develop a mathematical model for the spreading of a thin volatile liquid droplet on a uniformly heated surface. The model accounts for the effects of surface tension, evaporation, thermocapillarity, gravity and disjoining pressure for both perfectly wetting and partially wetting liquids. Previous studies of non-isothermal spreading did not include the effects of disjoining pressure and there...
